What is spirulina?

It’s a micro algae with a cyanic green color.

Spirulina is a single-celled organism, small algae (prokaryotic) that is able to perform photosynthesis and it is estimated that exists for more than 3.6 billion years. It belongs to the cyanobacteria family, which are considered the evolutionary form of bacteria that converted the atmospheric carbon dioxide in organic compounds by releasing oxygen.

The name…

Spirulina means small helix. It is named after its helical and spiral coils that its cells form of this prokaryotic organism. In this website we refer to the Anthrospira platensis species.

The colour…

The cyanic green colour of spirulina is due to its natural artificial:

  • Phycocyanin (responsible for the blue colour)
  • Chlorophyll (responsible for the green colour)

The difference between plant cells…

Spirulina does not have a tough cell wall as the plant cells. Spirulina’s cell wall is composed of peptidoglycan which provides it with higher digestion in contrary with other food supplements.
